I come from a family of blacksmiths; in today’s modern age they are hard to find.
Blacksmiths work with their hands; they take pride in perfect craftsmanship and they relentlessly persist to meld metal into valuable tools and equipment.
They create items that provide solutions to others. From horseshoes to armory, the blacksmith’s role is a challenging yet critical part in engineering of components for larger systems.
I have never worked as a blacksmith; however, I hold true to the values of the blacksmith.
I have replaced steel and hammer with data and the Internet.
I infuse the art of the blacksmith into modern business practices. I have always believed that with determination and persistence, anything can be achieved.
Like a blacksmith that repeatedly pounds metal to metal, working with immense heat from hot coals and fire, I pursue projects with purpose, I turn problems into solutions, and I stick to it until the result is reached. Over many years, I have shaped the necessary tools and materials for an exciting and entertaining life of my own.
I have done my fair share of the 9 to 5 white- and blue-collar jobs but it was my passion for creativity that drove me away from the status quo to discover something beyond it.
I worked in Hollywood alongside notable movie stars and directors.
My acting talent was recognised enough to gain significant support roles. Such as the role in the movie Metro, starring Eddie Murphy.
I played the seriously determined jewellery shop owner that stood up against the psychotic jewel thief that was holding us all hostage at gunpoint.
Off the screen, my energetic and outgoing nature would naturally allow me to make friends with almost everyone, from the sound and lighting guys to the directors and producers. Working onscreen and offscreen in Hollywood has given me deep insight about what it takes to live a fulfilling life.
I believe we all have the potential to be outstanding in whatever we decide to put our minds to. We all have the ability to achieve our biggest goals and aspirations.
I approach life in a way that has enabled me to achieve positions of university professorship, creative advisor at MTV, brand creation manager at Hallmark and script doctor for Warner Brothers, Pixar, and Apple.
Through deep reflection of my own life, I see that it is the combination of my blacksmith heritage with my experience in modern business practices as well as my exposure to movie making that forms the basis of a unique, novel approach that I would like to share with you now.
The trick is to actually see yourself and your current life situation as if you are the main character in a Hollywood blockbuster movie.
Every day you wake up and the camera is rolling, intimately capturing your every move, following you no matter where you go, providing an open, honest narrative of the thoughts and voices that are happening in your head.
You are the hero of the story.
As your own story plays out you will need to improvise and think on your feet. With practice you can apply wittiness, humour and tack to each and every challenge that stands before you.
See yourself with this Hollywood actor mindset every day and watch your life transform. Be open to deus ex machina moments, the moments that see something unexpected or implausible brought into your story line to resolve a situation or disentangle the plot.
Your “movie” is a thriller, a romantic comedy, an action-packed mystery, sci-fi, and true story documentary all wrapped up into one epic legendary tale.
With this mindset in place, you may eventually realise that you not only play the leading role, but you are also script writer, director, and producer. Build your story on what has happened in the past, script in solutions for current challenges, and set it up for a triumphant and magnificent future.
What is more, you have full access to a large array of supporting cast, film crew, directors, and producers. Once you take on this mindset you will become a great casting director and be able to see who the leading support role could be, and who would be interesting as having a cameo appearance. Get support from a great assistant director, partner with the perfect producers but do not forget that you are the one that holds all the strings when it comes to your story.
If my method sounds interesting to you then give this approach a go and prepare for a meaningful, sustainable, entertaining future.
Right now, I feel the world requires a paradigm shift. Old systems have brought us to the brink of instability in education, health, environmental sustainability, and even economic prosperity. Admittedly, old ways are near impossible to change but if the global direction does not change then we will surely end up playing a part in the biggest tragedy ever made. It is the time for a new normal.
We all have the power to contribute in making it better. The movie industry is not just for Hollywood. You can adopt the industry into your daily life practice today, know your role and go for it. Point your life to where you want it to be.
Mix the truth of reality with the creative intelligence that is within us all. My simple Hollywood themed mental device helps me every day to relax into the repetitive, persistent pounding of the blacksmith’s hammer that is held in my own hand.
I hope it works for you too.

People ask me, “What is the greatest achievement of your life?” That is difficult to say since I often feel that they all were great, but I never thought about them in that way when they were happening.
I just lived in the moment, like I am doing now. I guess I’m just a snowball. At this moment, I am branding DLS into a leading Global Design and Innovation Company.
I work on things that consume me. It’s the resting periods that are the toughest. If I am not developing something, I am in incubation, which I consider “the egg”. Now it’s “hatching time.”
This first activity kit marks the launch of our new “Business Play” initiative. Business Play is about utilizing theatrical technique in business development. It’s using gaming to garner interest in an otherwise tedious, often trying manufacture of what people think of as work.
Very few people I see enjoy work. Everyone I know in theatre (entertainment) can’t wait to get to it. They seem to be enlivened by it, energetic! Downright enthusiastic. Both provide creative application of talents and abilities. It seems to me that one compels people to follow a rigid format of routine and obligation and the others engage one’s creative application. Yet both demand completion. So, what’s the difference?
I think people are instruments of creative expression.
Sometimes people restrict this flow which they mete out in exchange for rewards commensurate to their efforts however abbreviated they may be.
This is a happiness indicator, I think. Now office workers spend time watching porno to excite them and their otherwise dull life. I don’t blame them. Office managers would rather squelch any measures that get workers blood flowing that are against company policy. Good luck!
Theatre often taps into sexual energy and almost never interferes with creative activities that result from it. Professionals have learned to control it and channel it into their hands and minds.
We see the “professionals” bastardize it into money making schemes, trying to corral it into exercises and book sales or even podcasts – misapplication of justice and even more an attempt at manipulation or channelling of energy by energy-vampires.
This Activity Kit – “The Monologue” is one of many activity kits we have designed for individual introspection, self-analysis, and application. It’s a saw baked in a cake for all of you inmates.
In constructing your brand story we guide you towards securing and resuming your foundation in yourself, to increase your knowledge and confidence through the art of storytelling. You are the author of the story about you, not someone else in the matrix. Give it a go. My good friend Bill Shakespeare lends us a hand.
But before we get to that let’s talk about what is a brand story.
A brand story is a narrative that conveys history, values, mission, and overall identity. It is used by people and companies alike to attain clarity about identity, purpose, direction and much more.
It’s like writing a story about yourself that’s not so difficult because your life is the easiest story you know. How many times have you heard people say they want to write a book? Well, here you have it! Let’s tune you in and before you know it, you’ll have your dream come true. Isn’t that what theatre is about? Seeing yourself on the silver screen? So, let’s begin to write your script.
You are the main character, the leading man or woman. You’re the Star. Sound good so far? Now don’t control yourself, exaggerate, fantasize, dream, it’s all in context. Don’t stop yourself! We can always tone it down later when we edit, but for now, live it up! You may have something there.
It’s sure to help you and if we’re lucky it may catch on and others will identify with you and look to you as a guiding force free from the chains of life. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? So, let’s get started and anytime you lose your way, go back, and read it again until you are imbedded in the you that you once knew as a child, free and energetic and not bound by rules others have taught you that
rob you of your soul.
You are a brand. A brand is your reputation, and it goes far beyond just providing information about yourself, your products, or services. It aims to create a deeper emotional connection with those around you. Look at the popularity movie starts garner. There’s an image built around them.
We’re not talking about bells and whistles; we’re talking about authenticity onstage and off. Remember, you are the star of your own show and not a bit player in someone else’s. Roll ’em! Let’s do a little study.
Brand stories incorporate elements of you and/or your company’s founding, evolution over time, challenges that you/it has overcome, core beliefs, and visions of the future.
The purpose of a brand story, or “BS” – we like to have fun too, which we will refer to as a script from time to time, is to differentiate you from the competition, to individuate. Standing out you build visibility and people identify with you. You engage people on a more personal level.
It helps to humanise your brand image by pointing out the people behind you, their own motivations, and their own journeys that they themselves have undertaken to get to where they are today. It’s not just dumb luck! You’ll see as we continue our cruise. You will also find that the people you used to despise will become your friends. You will understand them better and they you.
The process of brand storytelling begins with infusing your brand story into the culture around you. You become the topic of conversation, your personal journey is of interest to others because they identify with what you say; many people would like to do the same, but they just don’t know how, or they have some simple reasons for remaining in the dark. That’s their business and their
brand story.
Brand storytelling occurs through the company’s website, social media, marketing campaigns, and most importantly in-person interactions. When brand storytelling is effective, you resonate with people making them feel connected and by relating to it support it and cheer you on. It builds a strong presence and an enduring legacy.
No one is going to forget you. If they do, just tell them, “read the book!” Yours!.
Before you begin.
Each step requires you to you will assume the mindset of either Producer, Director, Writer, Editor or Actor.
You will notice a suggested time is given at each step, this time-boxing is a simple but effective productivity technique to help you stay focused and avoid procrastination. That said, it is easy to lose track of time when you get into the right head-space for this, so please feel free to spend as much time as you like on each step.

Yours Truly,
Divine Madman.
All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms;
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lin’d,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well sav’d, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion;
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything
Step 1: Producer – Envisioning the Big Picture (1 hour)
1.1 Read Shakespeare’s “All the world’s a stage” while thinking about your own personal life’s stages, the past, present, and future roles you have and will experience, and what the passage of time means to you.
1.2 As a Producer, reflect on your business journey so far. Consider your motivations, experiences, challenges, and triumphs.
1.3 Identify key themes, values, and experiences that you feel define your personal brand’s identity.
1.4 Sit still and listen to your mind chatter and bring clarity to the overarching message (the through line) that has the strongest presence.
Step 2: Director – Setting the Creative Direction (1 hour)
2.1 Review your reflections from step 1 and think about your personal core values and qualities.
2.2 As the Director, envision the “stages” you and your company has gone through, from inception to its current state.
2.3 Craft a high-level outline of your vision monologue, determining the sequence of ideas and emotions you want to convey.
Step 3: Writer – Crafting the Narrative (2 hours)
3.1 Using the outline, put on your Writer hat and begin crafting the monologue. Describe the stages, values, and impact of your journey.
3.2 Get inspiration from Shakespeare’s monologue to paint a picture of your unique value proposition by adding metaphors and imagery.
3.3 Give examples from your personal experiences and highlight why these things matter to you.
Step 4: Editor – Refining for Impact (2 hours)
4.1 As the Editor, review your initial draft. Focus on clarity, coherence, and emotional resonance.
4.2 Break down the monologue into smaller sections, ensuring each one flows smoothly and contributes to the overall impact.
4.3 Edit and polish your monologue, trimming unnecessary details and refining the language for maximum impact.
Step 5: Actor – Embodying the Story (1 hour)
5.1 Step into the role of the Actor and read your monologue aloud to get a sense of its rhythm and flow.
5.2 Begin memorizing each section gradually. Use visualization and association techniques to aid memory.
5.3 Practice reciting the monologue while focusing on tone, emphasis, and pacing.
Step 6: Rehearsing and Internalizing (1 hour)
6.1 Rehearse your monologue in its entirety multiple times, focusing on confident and authentic delivery.
6.2 Record yourself reciting the monologue and listen for areas of improvement in your performance.
6.3 Reflect on the emotions behind your words. As the Actor, internalize the passion and authenticity of your story.
Step 7: Sharing Your Brand Story (1 hour)
7.1 Invite a trusted friend, family member, or colleague to experience your monologue.
7.2 Receive feedback and insights from your audience. Use their impressions to refine and enhance your monologue.
7.3 Share on Social Media #businessplay.
